We Are Powered Up!

We have POWER in the house! This is such a big milestone heading into winter. After many delays trying to get the supplies we needed, things finally came together and we were able to turn on a few circuits. We now have some lights and a few outlets working. The days are dark early now so it is so nice to just turn on a switch in the house. Better yet is the ability to run electric space heaters until we get the radiant floor system up and running. We can't get over how cool it is to have a lit up house in the dark! We were delayed all through the early fall due to canceled or backordered supplies as well as some family related things. If there is one thing we have learned by building this house it is that timelines mean nothing.  We could not get the electrical panel that we needed. It took us several weeks to finally find the one we needed in stock. The wire was also an issue. We ended up buying a 500' roll of 4/0 awg aluminum and pulling three lengths of it together with a

Windows and Doors (Part 2) - End of Summer Update 2

So much has happened this summer that I needed to split my post into two. Click here to go to End of Summer Update 1.   This second part is dedicated to just windows and doors. We have finally gotten all the big windows and doors installed. All we have left are the small skylight windows that will be installed after we move in. There are a total of 41 of those. We took a week vacation and successfully installed both the very large arch window and the equally as large door system on the front of the house. This is a huge milestone for us. It completes the exterior envelope and we have already done more spray foam. (we have just a small amount left to do before it gets cold) Without more delay here are the photos of the large arch window installation. We are very thankful to have friends that still answer their phones when we call for extra muscle! First step that took most of the day was removing the airform and wood spray block that helped create the shape of the front overhang. Firs

End of the Summer Update 1 - Inspections passed, sheet rock started

This summer has been a whorl wind of work. We go from day jobs to nights and weekends working on the house.  It leaves very little time for anything else so I keep getting behind on updating the blog. Bear with me as I catch you up on our continued progress. I will need to do two back to back posts to cover it all. It is hard to believe that this time last year the dome company had just left and we finally had more than just a pile of dirt. We were attempting to find and check all our buried conduit and drain pipes. We were stuck using just photos and videos we had taken before they were buried by all the concrete off spray. Zoom forward a year and we passed a few more milestone inspections! Rough framing everywhere but the master suite wing (we will build that area after we move in).  Rough electrical in all but the kitchen cabinet area and the master wing (these need to be done later for several reasons) Rough plumbing in the kids wing. As part of our plumbing inspection we had to

Interior Framing, Insulation, Rough Electrical and MORE

This post is to catch up a bit on all the projects we have been working on the last couple of  months since I got behind in doing updates. It has been a busy spring and we have been making great progress on the house. The last three windows arrived. Unfortunately there was a mistake made in the CAD drawings and no one noticed it until they were complete. The three windows make a perfect arch to go over our 18 foot wide glass door. The mistake was related to the space between the windows. They didn't get the spacing correct to allow the windows to be installed next to each other creating a perfect arch in the existing framing. OOPS... Of course no one noticed it in the CAD drawings (including us).   Their solution has become our problem. They sent it as one unit. Fortunately, our framing isn't structural so the supports between the windows can be removed to accommodate the now 15 foot wide single window. Unfortunately, now we have to install it as one unit. This solution is
