Living in a Fish Bowl

One very visible design element of the house will be the solarium. We have included it in our plans to Monolithic even though they don't do glass domes because we want to make sure that we are prepared for how it connects. This is something that we will add after we move in. Ideally we would like for it to be an all glass geodesic dome. Unfortunately, so far the only company we have found that makes what we want is in the UK.
Solar Dome

The plan would be for it to connect right over the front door of the great room of the house. I am leaning towards a combination of the above 2 images. Solar Dome refers to these as skylights. A glass dome attached to a 4 or 5 ft. wall would give us extra height and lower the cost of materials. The new front door would become the door into the glass dome. This area would be an unheated enclosed area that would only get heated if we chose to leave the house open to it.

I spoke on the phone today with Monolithic and decided it was time to ask Solar Dome about their shipping to the US. Maybe we are totally crazy trying to import a glass dome kit from the UK! Time to find out my level of crazy. Crossing my fingers!

Spider Tie System Stem Wall Forms Complete

We finished building the stem wall forms last weekend! Personally I think they look super cool and I will be a bit sad to deconstruct them after we pour them. So much work to build them only to take them apart again and then just bury the whole thing underground. The original plan was to pour the stem wall on Friday October 11th but our weather was once again not cooperating. We are got yet another rain storm fueled by a storm/hurricane that thankfully mostly missed us. Because of this storm we are now scheduled to pour it on Monday October 14th. This was quite the ambitious DIY project for us. I can understand why we couldn't even get a company to put in a bid. Part of me is amazed that we pulled it off...so far. The truth will be in how it holds up to the concrete. It took almost 3000 screws to put the plywood skin on the Spider Tie towers and we cut 120 sheets of plywood! We joked that we were the Dometastic saw mill. Watch some videos of the process. It is...

Construction Video and Geodesic vs. Monolithic Domes

While we wait as patiently as possible for spring to dig holes for our new perc tests my posts will be directed towards general dome related things. Most people I talk to know what a dome home is but are clueless about the different types of domes. This post is to help show the differences between geodesic and monolithic domes with a few pictures of each. The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true and a video must be worth 100000 words. (Watch a video of a monolithic dome being constructed at the end of this post to really wrap your mind around the process.) Many people have asked me how a monolithic dome is different than a geodesic dome. The answer can be quite simple. A monolithic dome structure is all one piece and geodesic domes are made up of many pieces (triangles) connected together. Monolithic domes are sprayed concrete like some inground pools. Here are some photos of interior and exterior monolithic domes. Compare the above Mon...

Concrete Foundation Stem Wall Complete

Whew! We did it!!! HUGE THANKS to all our friends that continue to volunteer to help us with this crazy project. We got stuck doing this foundation ourselves and without the help from them we couldn't have done it. You guys ROCK and we super appreciate your willingness to slave away! We also attribute our success to using the Spider Tie forming system . It really made all the difference for us. I admit I had my doubts that we could pull it off AND get it done before winter. The rebar delays didn't help my confidence. Now there is a little voice in my head that keeps whispering "its only good if we did it correctly" but I will continue to suppress it since we won't know until they come to build the dome. There isn't time to celebrate yet. We have a bunch of stuff to finish up before winter halts our progress. The days are getting shorter and colder and we are feeling the pressure to get it done. We are pretty safe weather wise until the end of October but...
