Monolithic has many stock floor plans available to use as is or to change around. We decided to create a ranch dome (if that is a thing). It will be all one floor and very open with multi use areas. It isn't one single dome but instead 4 interconnected overlapping domes. The result is an aerial floor plan that looks like none other than good old Mickey Mouse. Then we added in a greenhouse dome. An all glass geodesic dome that will serve as a green house/solarium. This glass dome will attach to the house right over the front door entering into the great room. Our last house had a screened in porch but it was so far from the kitchen and not connected directly to the house that we never used it. We are designing it so that it will be easy to get to from the kitchen and just becomes extra square footage that isn't heated but should still get enough passive solar to stay above freezing in the winter. The kitchen and great room dome areas will be higher ceilings than the bedroom wings. The master wing has an open floor plan and custom bathroom that strategically places walls so there is privacy but there are no doors. The other wing initially will be for the kids but the long term plan is to rent it out as a small 1 bedroom. In the plans it shows where the eventual kitchen will go but initially it will be just hookups and we will use it as a studio/craft room. This is the floor plan I created using a basic stock floor plan from Monolithic. This will inevitably change but we felt it was the best way to start out.
While we wait as patiently as possible for spring to dig holes for our new perc tests my posts will be directed towards general dome related things. Most people I talk to know what a dome home is but are clueless about the different types of domes. This post is to help show the differences between geodesic and monolithic domes with a few pictures of each. The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true and a video must be worth 100000 words. (Watch a video of a monolithic dome being constructed at the end of this post to really wrap your mind around the process.) Many people have asked me how a monolithic dome is different than a geodesic dome. The answer can be quite simple. A monolithic dome structure is all one piece and geodesic domes are made up of many pieces (triangles) connected together. Monolithic domes are sprayed concrete like some inground pools. Here are some photos of interior and exterior monolithic domes. Compare the above Mon
