Our first clash was over sky lights. I love sky lights! We had one skylight in our first house and it made that area of the house so much nicer. My plants actually lived for once. Mr. Dometastic hates them. Well... maybe hate is too strong a word. He likes them in other peoples houses. He thinks they are weak points in an otherwise "defensible home". I argue that our armed attacking neighbors won't be able to climb the side of the dome to get to the weak points.
Initially this argument worked and we just went down in the number of skylights but as you can see in my previous post. Now there are NONE.
Don't get me wrong, I do get it. Eventually they will get old and leak and need to be fixed or replaced. That was his attempt to appeal to my realistic side. If there is a hurricane a tree branch could fall on it just right and break one. It is also an area in an otherwise very insulated house that would allow heat loss. (That's the only one that actually makes sense!) Really we could go on.... And we did.... until I caved in..... No Skylights....sigh
He argued the no skylights in the same intensity that all men argue not to paint the awful dated dark wood paneling from the 70's. If you haven't guessed already, our last house still sports a very 1970's room because I lost that argument too. The best part of the dark wood paneling argument is when he says "But you can't go back to just wood if you paint it!" Like anyone would choose to go back to tacky 70's land.
fight! for your right! to light!
ReplyDeleteYou know it! And I did! And I didn't win but I did get to put in 41 glass blocks that will function like skylights! :D Just a week ago we were standing in the middle of the kitchen dome and he turns to me and says "You know what would have been super cool? If we had put in an oculus skylight at the top of this dome." /sigh
