I hope this is the final for our plans! Barring any issues, the plans are good to go.
I edited the standard construction documents myself to reflect the removal of a basement/garage under the dome. I am not capable of creating the plans from scratch but I am capable of editing them thanks to my past work experience in an industrial design firm. While I have never worked on architectural documents they are not substantially different than editing structural design documents. The only difference is the subject. Might as well save some money where we can since everything we do seems to run over budget or we end up with a surprise cost!
OUR EDITS:
There is one big thing I really wanted that had to be deleted.... My recycling chute! No basement = no more recycling chute from the kitchen to the recycling bin. Sniff, sniff...I was REALLY looking forward to it. At least I still have my laundry chute....
It is the only sacrifice that I will really miss with the changes. All along we were trying to create a house without stairs and it always bothered me a bit to have stairs from the garage up. It was a whole flight of them. We semi joked about putting in an elevator and even looked at pricing. We still discarded the idea but it was surprising that residential ones are not as expensive as I expected.
More things are happening right now in a bit of a flurry of activity before winter sets in for good. Right now we are looking into the easiest/most cost effective way to build all those crazy curvy frost walls. Go back and look at that floor plan! That is a lot of perimeter and it all has to have a curved 4 foot (or taller where it steps down on the low side of the hill) frost wall. Eeshh... It is an understatement to say that contractors don't want to have anything to do with us. Everything is custom so all the forms will be throw away at the end. Stay tuned and I will be adding updates as we go.
New floor plan and new elevation view from the final documents.

OUR EDITS:
- Delete basement/garage
- Change the area previously for the stairs to a bigger mudroom/laundry (and now utilities)
- Edit walls to reflect a new way into mudroom from the greatroom front door
- Edit all the electrical and mechanical pages to add utilities that were previously in the basement and move everything to the new mechanical area that is now where the stairwell was in the originals

Can't wait to see the finished product. My thoughts are 'one-of-a-kind' and amazing
ReplyDeleteIt will be slow going but we are really excited for the journey!
DeleteDo you have two kitchens?
ReplyDeleteWe will be running all the conduit in the concrete etc. for a second small in-law kitchen but not installing anything kitchen related. Everything will just be capped off. The plan was to design a house we never have to move out of even if we need live in help when we are old. It costs almost nothing to install the conduit now but it would be a huge pain to do it later if we need it. The plans needed to show the second kitchen so all the plumbing and electrical would get into the plans. SO yes....there is a second kitchen but it may or may not ever be needed.
